Craft Club

Mrs Baker and Mrs Portus have run a very successful craft club in school for many years.  They have put together some of the projects they do with the children.

Air drying clay

Air drying modeling clay is easy to use and decorate.

I made templates of the children’s initials and they rolled the clay out using guide sticks approximately 5mm deep.  Using one either side of the slab ensures the clay is even, provided they remember to keep the rolling pin on the sticks.

Paint with acrylics for best results.

Grass people

You will need...

  1. Cut a section of old tight (aboput 25cm)
  2. Tie off one end if necessary.
  3. Place some grass seed in the bottom and then fill with a mixture of about one third sawdust, rwo thirds compost.
  4. Shape to resemble a head.
  5. Tie off the bottom when right size to sit in the pot.
  6. Shape a nose and fasten with an elastic band.  (some children put seed above the nose to make a moustache.)
  7. Glue on eyes.
  8. Decorate pot.
  9. When dry, water the seed.

Hand puppets

You will need...

  1. Print out pattern for puppets,
  2. We cut the felt out ready for the children to assemble and pin themselves.
  3. The first time we made these, the children stitched buttons on for eyes before they pinned the back and front together.
  4. The second time we used the stick on wobbly eyes you can buy from craft shops.
  5. Ears can be sewn either between the back and front or stitched to the front of the puppet.

This project is OK for Y4/5 children.

Salt dough

You will need

Mix together and knead for about 10 minutes Bake on a low heat for at least 4 to 5 hours

Dough can be coloured with food dye instead of painting it afterwards.

Push paper clips into soft dough for hangers before you bake.

Paint with acrylics for best results.  Use a sealer or brush on glaze if you want models to last.

We used the dough to make Christmas tree decorations and twisted garlands.

Make sure both surfaces are wet if adding flowers and decorations etc.
